Man and Superman Links

This is hands down my favorite George Bernard Shaw play. Have I read every Shavian play? No — but I’ve read a lot of them, thanks to a terrific course taught by Gale Larson back in my CSUN days.

If you are one of my students, you might be interested in some links to some of the articles I’ve written about this “comedy and philosophy.”

Eng 103 – In Class Essay

A) Based upon the Time magazine article, “The Growing Backlash Against Overparenting” (as well as your own observations), analyze the pros and cons of a current parenting trend.

B) Responding to John Taylor Gatto’s “Against School,” write an essay that either supports or refutes the author’s views on public education.

Notice that Topic A can be written as a Rogerian OR Classic essay. In contrast, the “support vs. refutation” nature of Topic B lends itself nicely to a classical argument.
Don’t forget: a good argument addresses opposing viewpoints.
Students should avoid “you” phrases.
In addition to academic forms of evidence, personal narratives may serve as supportive information, but avoid excessive use of personal pronouns. (For example: “I think”, “I believe”, “In my humble opinion.”)

P.S.
Thanks for a great class. I look forward to reading your last batch of essays.
To learn your final grade in the class, you may send me an email anytime after Dec. 11th.
