Getting my Hopes Up… and Quickly Dashed

Saturday, August 16th, 2008

Hey there reader who doesn’t exist… Here’s my latest Magnificent Failure.

About two months ago I finished writing a middle-grade fiction novel. I won’t bore you with the details of the story… beside, you might steal the idea! Anyway, three weeks ago I received a letter from an intern at HarperCollins. She wanted to read the rest of the manuscript (she read the first few chapters). So, I sent it off in the mail and waited.

While I was waiting, I attended the SCWBI Conference in Los Angeles. It was a truly inspirational time. I listened to literary geniuses. I interacted with fellow writers. By the end of the weekend, I was all fired up and ready to create works of brilliance.

And guess what I got in the mail the day after the conference. It was a rejection letter from HarperCollins. The intern had very quickly read the material and returned it to me — I’ve never had such a quick turn around from a publishing company!

For the first time in my writing career, I wish they had taken a bit longer to respond. What a dismal way to end the Conference!

Fear not, dear reader. I shan’t give up. After all, it’s far too entertaining to see how I’ll crash and burn next!
